Nick T. Place , Dean Introduction The potential for a given pesticide to cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms depends on 1) its inherent toxicity to the specific organism and 2) the organism’s exposure to the compound in terms of concentration and duration (Table 1). The inherent toxicity is a specific relationship between the organism and the chemical, which cannot be changed (i.e. specific mode of action). On the other hand, exposures can be highly variable due to a variety of factors including application rates and techniques, chemical and physical properties of the chemical and environmental conditions at the time of application.

Aquatic versus mammalian toxicology: applications of the comparative approach.
The large body of literature and techniques generated by mammalian toxicity studies provides a conceptual and technical framework within which the absorption, fate, and disposition of xenobiotics in aquatic organisms can be studied. This review emphasizes the similarities and differences between mammalian and aquatic systems, e.g., lung vs. gill as site of absorption and toxicity. These must be...
متن کاملThe fathead minnow in aquatic toxicology: past, present and future.
This paper reviews the roles of the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) as a small fish model in the field of aquatic toxicology. The species has been (and is) extensively used both for regulatory testing and research, especially in North America. For example, tests with the fathead minnow, ranging from 48-h lethality through partial and full life-cycle assays, are routinely used for regulator...
متن کاملThe Effects of Lead Toxicity on the Hematological Parameters Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) at Varying Salinity Levels
Background: Lead (Pb) is an important metal used in industries, mining and agriculture. It is equally important to the aquatic ecosystems and has negative impact on the health of aquatic organisms. Methods: The LC50 of lead toxicity at varying salinities was first determined for 96 hours. Then juvenile fish were transferred to tanks individually and were exposed to 0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 mg/l o...
متن کاملAquatic toxicology: past, present, and prospects.
Aquatic organisms have played important roles as early warning and monitoring systems for pollutant burdens in our environment. However, they have significant potential to do even more, just as they have in basic biology where preparations like the squid axon have been essential tools in establishing physiological and biochemical mechanisms. This review provides a brief summary of the history o...
متن کاملEcotoxicology of human pharmaceuticals.
Low levels of human medicines (pharmaceuticals) have been detected in many countries in sewage treatment plant (STP) effluents, surface waters, seawaters, groundwater and some drinking waters. For some pharmaceuticals effects on aquatic organisms have been investigated in acute toxicity assays. The chronic toxicity and potential subtle effects are only marginally known, however. Here, we critic...
